Like handcrafted Mexican and Spanish tiles, these ceramic tile coaster sets from the "Deep Sea Series" consist of 4 decoupage tiles with original illustrations from the early 19th century. The coasters are varnished and cork backed.
The illustrations were found from Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) who was a German medical doctor and naturalist. Although he had limited education, he became a teacher in Hamburg, learned to read and write German, Latin and studied anatomy. He later settled in Berlin where he became a physician. Always interested in natural history, he amassed a private collection of natural objects. He is generally considered one of the most important ichthyologists of the 18th century, and wrote many papers on natural history, comparative anatomy, and physiology.
Every stone coaster is custom made and you have the option to choose a matte or glossy finish. We can also provide photos of the stones available and you can choose a specific tile. If you would like a different size, you're welcome to get in touch and we can do a custom order! Since each travertine tile is unique, differences in color and structure are possible.
